Pads are areas of copper, typically circular or rectangular in shape but can have any shape, used to fix electronic components to the board and to create points of interconnection between the pins of the components and the copper tracks. A pad can exist on a single layer of the board, as in the case of SMD component pads, or it can take on a three-dimensional consistency by presenting a copper area on each layer and a central hole through the board. The pads are mainly used in the creation of footprints but can also be used individually.
