When you create a new object, it is added to the current layer and placed above all other objects in the layer. You can therefore consider a drawing as a series of objects placed one on top of the other. The order of overlap becomes evident when viewing or printing overlapping objects with contrasting contours or fills. An object placed higher up in the order of overlap is displayed and printed above those placed below. If the objects do not overlap, the order of overlap is not evident and neither are the results of the changes made to it.

To change the order of overlapping object

Perform the following operations:

  1. Select objects.

  2. Choose the commands from the Arrange menu in the Operations menu.

    • To place an object on top of all other objects on the layer, choose the Operations » Arrange » Bring to Front command or click the button in the toolbar.

    • To place a selected object under all other objects on the layer, choose the Operations » Arrange » Send to Back command or click the button in the toolbar.

    • To move an object forward by one position, choose the Operations » Arrange » Bring Forward command or click the button in the toolbar.

    • To move an object backwards by one position, choose the Operations » Arrange » Send Backward command. or click the button in the toolbar.

    • To bring over a certain object, hold SHIFT and select the reference object then choose the Operations » Arrange » In Front of Object command or click the button in the toolbar.

    • To bring down a certain object, hold down SHIFT and select the reference object then choose the Operations » Arrange » Behind Object. or click the button in the toolbar.

These commands change the order in which objects overlap in their layer, so that, with objects arranged on multiple layers, the absolute arrangement of objects in the drawing is determined by the order in which the layers overlap. If you consider two layers and each contains a large number of objects, selecting the object that is in the background of the lower layer and clicking on the Bring to Front command, the object is brought to the foreground on the lower layer. However, the objects of the highest layer are still above the objects of the lowest layer. So, if you want to transform the object placed in the background of the lowest layer into the object in the foreground of the highest layer, you must first move the object to the top layer and then select the Bring to Front command.

To move an object from one layer to another

Perform the following operations:

  1. Select the object to move. The status line indicates which level the object is on.

  2. Make the layer on which you want to move the object active.

  3. Choose the command Operations » Arrange » Bring on Current Layer or click the button in the toolbar.
